Bioplastics are biobased and/or are biodegradable (including compostable and anaerobic digestible) plastics that provide consumers and manufacturers with a revolutionary option to help safeguard the environment and support a sustainable future. The primary objective of bioplastic is to reduce our consumption of oil, a precious resource, and replace it with biomass, a sustainable alternative that has a much lower ecological impact.
These new plastics can transform the packaging and food service industries to eliminate petrochemicals from our waste streams and to reduce our reliance on precious resources that are in limited supply.
Resin manufacturing begins once the appropriate biopolymer matrix is selected. These biopolymers include polylactic acid (Ingeo® PLA), plant biomass, PHA, PHB, or similar ingredients. Harmony Bio has purchased the former Cereplast patent portfolio that covered 34 formulations, about half of which involved PLA and PLA performance enhancing additives to create improved temperature performance and related characteristics. Harmony Bio will continue to develop this portfolio and its own initiatives in intellectual property including additional patent filings.
The selected biopolymer is blended with other biodegradable components to reinforce its molecular structure through a proprietary process. The finished result is extruded into the form of Harmony Bio® pellets or rollstock.

HOW OUR RESINS ARE MADE
Bioplastics manufacturing begins once the appropriate polymer matrix is selected. The polymer matrix may be a biopolymer such as polylactic acid (NatureWorks Ingeo® PLA), PHA or PBS or other resin such as PBAT, polypropylene (PP) or thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). Other blend components can include fillers (e.g., calcium carbonate, talc or gypsum), starch (e.g., from corn, rice or potato) or additives (e.g., UV and thermal stabilizers, lubricants and compatibilizers).
The blended components are then dispersively mixed together using Harmony Bioplastics processing equipment and proprietary know-how. The resultant bioplastic is then prepared for use by a customer in traditional plastics processing equipment, including injection molders and sheet, profile and blown film extruders.
Harmony Bioplastics are packaged in the appropriate materials for maintaining the proper moisture content in the resin, eliminating the need for drying by many customers.

Harmony Bio® brand disposables provide high quality, sustainable and renewable products for the food industry. All Harmony Bio® brand disposables products are made using a high starch content bioplastic material. Our blueprint for change is in taking products traditionally made from 100% petroleum based materials and making the same products with up to 70% renewable materials!
Our products make a significant contribution to minimizing greenhouse gas emissions and oil dependency by drastically conserving resources, all while promoting rural economic agricultural growth and development.
Harmony Bio® RESIN & ROLLSTOCK
Harmony Bio® Resins are made from renewable, natural resources such as plant starches and sustainable biomass alternatives including wheat chaff, rice hulls and corn stover.
Trellis Bioplastics now owns all the patents and related intellectual property associated with previously named Cereplast Compostables and Sustainables lines of resins.
We are offering those resins under the Trellis Earth® brand as both pellets (for injection molding) and as extruded rollstock for thermoforming.
Harmony Bio® COMPOSTABLES
Harmony Bio® Compostable resins are made from renewable resources and are ecologically sound substitutes for fossil fuel-based plastics, replacing up to 100% of the petroleum-based ingredients used in traditional plastics. Compostable resins are for disposables and packaging including cups, straws, cutlery and bags.
